Opuku

Opuku’s father developed a serious gambling problem, accumulated debts, and sold the family’s belongings. His wife eventually left, leaving him to care for Opuku alone. During a later conflict with people to whom he owed money, Opuku’s father was fatally injured. Because of the stigma surrounding his father’s actions, members of the community largely turned away from Opuku. Anikana Foundation found him in a vulnerable situation, learned his story, and chose to take him into its care.
